A small and simple bush camp situated on the banks of the Zambezi River, overlooking reed islands where buffalo feed and hippos bask.
Zambia > Lower Zambezi National Park
Overview
Old Mondoro Bush camp is situated in the far east of the Lower Zambezi National Park, an area shared with only two other camps – the old-style Ana Tree Lodge and the more luxurious Zambezi Kulefu Camp. This means that you and your guide can explore this wilderness without too much disturbance from other vehicles. An undertaking not as easy further west where there are more camps sharing their area with the various safari camps situated outside the park boundaries and self-drive visitors.
Accommodating only 8 guests in 4 bush chalets, Old Mondoro is somewhat reminiscent of the mobile camps of East Africa, rebuilt from scratch and then dismantled each safari season. With outstanding views of the Zambezi, the tents at Old Mondoro rest on temporary slabs, and have en-suite facilities with flush toilets, canvas bucket showers and washbasins. The tents have open views during the day, and at night canvas drop-down blinds with windows are lowered to provide more privacy and security. All the tents are rustically furnished and have comfortable bedding and large mosquito nets. In keeping with the old world atmosphere, paraffin lanterns are used to provide ambient lighting.
Old Mondoro Bushcamp’s main area is a large, open-sided structure with a polished stone floor and canvas roof. Next to comfortable wicker lounge furniture there is a small library with various reference books and novels. There is also a fairly well stocked bar and the communal dining table. Beyond this building is the campfire and beside this is the boat station at the Zambezi River’s edge. Old Mondoro is a true bush camp without any electricity in these main areas; it’s lit by storm lanterns at night. This stretch of river bank is shaded by a beautiful grove of winterthorn trees. Enjoy the scenery, and the wildlife feeding in the open glades below, on a guided walking safari. Other activities offered at Old Mondoro Bush camp are day and night 4WD safari drives, boat trips and canoeing on the Zambezi in two-man Canadian canoes.

Location
Zambia is situated mainly on a vast plateau 1.8 miles above sea level, and boasts the Zambezi, Kafue and Luangwa rivers - as well as one of the largest waterfalls in the world, the Victoria Falls, which it shares with neighboring Zimbabwe. Most of the country has a mild, pleasant climate, while the river valleys are hotter and more humid; the extreme north becomes tropical on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of Zambia's ten large lakes. While Lusaka is the country's capital, Livingstone, just 6 miles from the Falls, is more well known to travelers as the 'adventure capital' offering adrenalin-packed activities on and around the Falls and the Zambezi River.
