‘Mr Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place. We’re asking you for 67 minutes.”
This was the call that went out to people everywhere in celebration of Nelson Mandela turning 93 on 18 July 2011.
The celebration of Mandela Day aims to serve as a global call to action for people to ‘recognize their individual power to make an imprint and help chant the world around them for the better’, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said at the launch of the campaign in April. Mandela said at the time of the launch that he would be ‘honored if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation’.
Thompsons Africa leaped at the opportunity to be part of this remarkable and exciting campaign by ‘donating’ just 67 minutes of their time to making a difference in the lives of the children taken care of by Phakamisa and Sinosizo Home Based Care. Jumping in with enthusiasm, the staff at Thompsons donated gifts that were delivered on the 19th of July, 2011 and hoped that this small donation will make a difference in the loves of some of the children housed at these incredible organizations. Their hope is also that this initiative will encourage other corporate companies to become more involved in their communities and be inspired by an incredible leader and man, Mr Nelson Mandela!
