July 05, 2011: Samburu After the Floods

It has been more than a year since floodwaters devestated most of the camps and lodges located along Samburu’s Ewaso Nyiro River.  Pollman’s driver guide Frank was at Larsens on the day of the flood and relayed the story as we returned to larsens.

“The first sign that something was wrong was the sound of the elephants.  It was like they were going mad.  As the river started rising rapidly, one of the guests shouted, ‘Water’s coming!’ and it was clear it was time to make our way to higher grounds.”

Samburu Serena Lodge was hit worst and the reopening date is still not decided.  The other camps and lodges have now rebuilt and recovered, ranging from camps like Ashnil that had only been open a week before the floods to Samburu Lodge with a long history in the region

Through our four day trip in Samburu National Reserve, we heard a lot of stories. Many talked about seeing a Land Cruiser being washed down the river.  We wondered what became of all of the kitchen equipment, crockery and cutlery. We inspected some of the renovations and rebuilding that had taken place.
