Whether you’re a lover of history, or simply a person who thrills to great story telling, a visit to the Battlefields is an extraordinary experience. This tour is particularly interactive, so when your specialist Battlefield Guides recount the gripping tales of these battles, you’ll be right there where they happened… perhaps looking over your shoulder. This is theater of the mind, and you’ll live through the drama of the Anglo-Boer and Anglo-Zulu wars as they unfolded. You’ll feel for the young lives lost prematurely, you’ll marvel at their bravery, you’ll feel the heat, the terror, even the homesickness of those so far from home.

This Battlefields tour to the sites of Isandlwana, Fugitive’s Drift, Rorkes Drift and Spioenkop, is not a dry history lesson. You’ll hear fascinating tales about Ghandi, even about Churchhill, but mostly you’ll hear about young men without legendary names who performed legendary deeds.

Highlights

  • Fascinating battlefield history explained by an expert guide
  • Visit three battlefields
  • Spectacular KwaZulu Natal scenery
  • Guesthouse accommodation

Itinerary

Day 1 - Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift

Head inland towards South Africa’s famous battlegrounds. Your expert Battlefield guide will recount the Anglo Zulu War Battle of Isandlwana, where 20,000 Zulu warriors wiped out almost an entire regiment in only 2½ hours. Visit Rorke’s Drift, where a handful of British soldiers, outnumbered 35 to 1, fought off 4,000 Zulus for 12 hours.

Day 2 - Spioenkop

Your guide will recreate the tragic battle between Boer and Brit in1900. The British occupying Spioenkop’s summit were in full view of Boer rifle and artillery fire. Incredibly, Winston Churchill, a Lieutenant serving in the South African Light Horse, and Mahatma Gandhi, a stretcher bearer, witnessed the battle.
