After being collected from the hotel, drive through the suburbs, to provide a feel of suburban living. Drive through Parktown where you will learn more about the “Randlords” and drive past some of their magnificent residences. Travel to Parkwood where some of Johannesburg’s top galleries can be found. Visit the Goodman Gallery which is at the forefront of the local contemporary art scene. It represents a variety of artists, both local and international, and has a regular exhibition program of primarily solo and two -person shows. It is home to William Kentridge, Penny Siopis, Sam Nhlengethwa , Zwelethu Mthethwa, David Koloane and David Goldblatt, among other top names. Continue on to the Kim Sacks Gallery, which specialises in contemporary South African design, fine craft objects and folk and tribal art from the continent, including jewelery, wood carvings, furniture, ceramics, and basketwork. Thereafter drive to Soweto, the largest black residential area in South Africa. Enjoy lunch at a typical shebeen (local restaurant). In many ways, the story of Soweto is the story of South Africa. The tour includes some of the major points of interest, such as Freedom Square, Hector Pieterson Memorial and Nelson Mandela’s former home. Also, visit the local gallery, Ma- Africa, where a variety of Soweto artists’ work is exhibited. Late afternoon return to the hotel.
