Pretoria Tour

After an introductory talk, drive to the outskirts of Pretoria to visit the Voortrekker Monument. Described as the “Bastion of Afrikanerdom”; the reasons behind the building of the Monument are outlined. Inside the Monument visit the Hall of Heroes, and take a lift to the top of the Monument for the view over Pretoria. Drive into Pretoria and visit Church Square, to view the statue of Kruger and examine the buildings of the old “Raadsaal”, The Palace of Justice, and some of the turn of the century buildings in the Square (the original market place). Thereafter visit Church Street Cemetery, where “Heroes acre” is located and the graves of prominent Politicians, Afrikaner Poets and Presidents are to be found. Stories are narrated of the various Personalities. Continue to Paul Kruger’s home in Church Street, visit Melrose House (where the “Peace of Vereeniging” was signed in 1902), and Churchill’s Prison, the building where Winston Churchill was imprisoned in November 1899. Then travel to Irene, outside Pretoria, to visit the small Museum on former Prime Minister Jannie Smuts’ farm. Continue to the Union Buildings, built by Sir Herbert Baker; enjoy the beautiful view over Pretoria. Finally visit Freedom Park, which was launched in 2000 and serves as a response to the need identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for symbolic reparation of past conflicts in South Africa.
