At 19,380 feet, the summit of Kilimanjaro is the rooftop of Africa. The snowy peaks of the mountain have given inspiration and challenge to creative minds and active adventurers for more than a century.

The tallest free-standing mountain on earth, Kili looms over both Kenya and Tanzania, but all climbs start in Tanzania. Over 25,000 people per year attempt to summit Kili, and over 50% are successful.  Route to the summit, though challenging, do not require technical climbing skills and equipment such as ropes and pitons. Good physical fitness and mental toughness play a large part, but success is sometimes attributable to the climbers ability to function at high altitude. Most climbers feel the affects of the altitude, and find the climb more challenging than they expected.

The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field before summiting. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although seven days is recommended. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due to crowds, it loses some of its splendor.

The Rongai route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. This route is less populated. Rongai has a more gradual slope than the mountain’s other routes. Rongai is a moderately difficult route, and is recommended for those with less backpacking experience. Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes, Rongai makes up for this by passing through true wilderness areas for nearly the entire way, and because the descent is made via the Marangu route; no backtracking.

On both routes, nights are spent in alpine tents, with two people per three person tent, so that there is space to spread out. All supplies, camping equipment and personal gear are portered, and meals are prepared.  Climbers carry only a day pack. Food served on the mountain is generally plain and wholesome, including a lot of carbohydrates, stews and soups, vegetables and fresh fruit.  Special meal requirements are catered for, with advanced notice.

Those who reach the summit consider this among their lifetime achievements.
