6 Days, 5 Nights

In addition to the option of a gorilla trek, this 6-day itinerary adds the chimps and colobus monkeys of verdant Nyungwe Forest National Park to the mix.

Chimps are the entertainers of the forest, their antics and expressive faces are completely enchanting and relatable. A chimp trek is a completely different experience to a gorilla trek, so diverse are their natures.  These adorable primates fascinated Dr. Jane Goodall her entire career, convincing her that they could provide us a window into our own origins.

Colobus monkeys are unlike other monkeys in that they do not have thumbs. Their beautiful black fur strongly contrasts with the long white mantle, whiskers, bushy tail, and beard around the face. Watching a troop of Colobus monkeys leap from limb to limb, their long fur flying, is one of the special treats on offer in scenic Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Day 2: Kigali - Volcanoes National Park

Spend the morning on a privately guided tour of Kigali, including time at the powerful Genocide Memorial, a must see. After lunch at Kigali Serena Hotel, travel northwest about 2.5 hours to through the beautiful terraced hillsides that display Rwanda’s landscape. Arrive at Ruhengeri, the base for Gorilla trekking at the Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes National Park). The town itself, located only 15 miles from the Uganda border, is relatively a small city of about 70,000 people. The constant flow of humanity is quite remarkable. The town has great views of the surrounding volcanoes. Check into your accommodation. Rest of day at leisure to explore the town. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park

This morning, your guide will transfer you to Volcanoes National Park for your gorilla trek with an expert primate guide and tracking team. The trek to the gorilla family may be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 3 hours. Porters are available to assist you with the trek, this is inexpensive and highly recommended. Those who have mobility challenges can hire a team of porters to carry them on a sedan chair. After an amazing, never to be forgotten hour with the gorilla family, you will descend and transfer back to your accommodation for lunch. The afternoon is free for you to explore the town or opt for a visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village at around $35 per person. (B,L,D)

During your hike you may also spot migratory birdlife including the Ross’ turaco, grey-cheeked hornbill, red-breasted sparrow hawk and regal sunbird.
